In a recent CIPD survey a third of the organisations surveyed indicated that they have cut their training budgets and just over a third expect budgets to be reduced next year. However, the survey also indicated that the majority of the 900 firms responding to the institute’s annual Learning and Development survey said learning and development remained a high priority, regardless of their financial situation.
Many organisations do not currently have the budget to send their staff on potentially costly public training courses. So how do you make reduced training budgets work even harder for you ?
Firstly by avoiding the mistake of equating capability development exclusively with training courses. Capability development can be achieved through a wide variety of techniques, often more successfully than sending people on public courses. For example, well thought through internal and external coaching and on-job training plans can lead to much more rapid capability development than external courses that often lack sufficient follow through.
Similarly, instead of sending your people on public courses, consider bringing in external consultants to provide structured coaching sessions. In addition to saving travel and accommodation costs, these sessions can often be negotiated on a flat consulting rate basis, thereby making them much more cost effective than individual courses. Whilst consultants make not provide the branded 'freebies' of a major training company, the right type of consultant will have the core materials and background needed to provide successful coaching. Having used this approach successfully in in-house environments previously, Applio has developed a variety of Applied Workshops that offer a faster and cheaper way to develop capability than most public courses offer.
